Celebrate Reading and Writing

Posted Sunday, May 13th, 2012 by Mrs. Buzek

Blackwell had a guest author come and work with students for 4 days.  He helped each grade create a    story, illustrate it, then bind it.  The whole school was involved and each classroom ended up with a book!  Each book was on display during our Celebrate Reading and Writing Celebration.  Thank you PTA for bringing  Mr. Lehman to our school.

Whats Happening at Blackwell? 5-1-12

Posted Monday, April 30th, 2012 by Mrs. Buzek

 Blackwell families and friends,

I cannot believe that today is May 1st!  Time is going by rather quickly and it will continue to do so due to the variety of activities scheduled this month.

Thank you to our families for attending Celebrate Reading and Writing Night this past Thursday. Students were able to showcase their wonderful writing pieces and demonstrate how much they have grown as writers since the beginning of the year. Thank you to Edie R. and Kim L. for creating a one of a kind experience for the students of Blackwell to work with an author to create a story as an entire school. Our students created a masterpiece that will live within their classrooms for other students to share for many years to come. Remember, our Scholastic Online Book Fair goes through May 4th. Families can go to www.scholastic.com and type in Elizabeth Blackwell to order books to support our school.

Here are some other reminders for the upcoming weeks:

*May 1st to May 11th -MAP testing continues this week and next. Encourage your child(ren) to do their best and reach for their growth targets from the fall.

*Wednesday, May 2nd – ½ Day Institute Day (No School EC/K and 11:40 Dismissal for Grades 1-6)

*Thursday, May 3rd – Hot Lunch

*Monday, May 7th – Pizza Day

*Tuesday, May 8th – Market Day Pick-up

- Kindergarten Info Night from 6-7pm

-PTA Meeting at 7pm

PBIS at Blackwell

Posted Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 by Mrs. Buzek

Dear Blackwell Community,

Wow! Time has flown with all the exciting events that have been taking place at Blackwell. We welcomed back all students to 2012 with a PBIS booster. The students participated in a Bingo game which helped them review what it means to Be Respectful, Responsible and Safe in school.

During January, students were working on how to be respectful to others. Our school-wide focus was on aggression and ways to handle anger. Students worked through ways to handle their anger instead of being aggressive. Since our goal was met, all students were able to participate in a school-wide board game day celebration. Students were allowed to bring in board games and card games on February 7th, 8th, or 9th to celebrate their success.

With our celebration also comes a time for a new goal. As you will see in our data graph below, one of our next areas to work on will be defiance. Many of the referrals that we have seen in the month of January have been for students not following directions, not listening closely to an adult, and not staying focused on their task. We will ask for your support at home to discuss with your children what it means to be respectful and follow directions. Our goal will be to drop the referrals to less than 7 for the month of February. If we meet our goal, we will have our next celebration in the month of March.

Blackwell students are fantastic. They worked very hard during the month of January to earn their celebration and we have confidence that they will earn their February celebration. We thank you for your continued support of our PBIS goals. Together we are all a great TEAM!

__________________________________________________________

 Dear Parents and Guardians,

Happy holidays! As a Blackwell staff, we have decided to support the “Food for Families” project we have done for the past several years. For those of you that are new to the Blackwell Community, we are asking that in lieu of gifts for staff members, please consider making a donation to this project. We have many families that utilize local food pantries and so this year we are asking for donations which can be used to purchase food. So as to not restrict where we can shop as a result of having specific gift cards, we are asking for cash/ check only. With this money, we will host our own Food Pantry in February where we will have non-perishable foods as well as fresh fruit, vegetables, and meats.

If you make a donation to the Food for Families project, your child can give their teacher a card that acknowledges your contribution: “A gift to the Blackwell Food for Pantry Project has been given in: (teacher’s name)”. Cards/ envelopes will go home in each family folder soon; more cards will be available in the office.

If you would like to contribute, please send your check
(made payable to Blackwell School) or cash to the Main Office by December 16, 2011. Please mark the envelope: “Holiday Food for Families“.

We appreciate your consideration in this matter. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Meg Kwak (847.357.5534) or Mary Brodie (847.357.2007).
